AWESOME ATHLETES.
STELLAR SCHOLARS.

Are you a competitive downhill or nordic skier? Are you involved in dance or other extra curricular that makes it difficult to attend a "regular" high school because of training schedules and competitions? Do you want to find a place where you are supported through flexible scheduling while still getting the benefits of a free, public education?

North Tahoe High School's Ski and Independent Study Academies may be the perfect fit for you.

*Note that this program is for students in grades 9-12.

Flexible scheduling allows for a consistent training regimen.

Most students in our academies enroll in 4-5 on-site academic courses and 1-3 independent study courses through a number of providers both online (self-pay) and in-district (subject to availability). The timing of your training periods depends on your individual needs and our course availability. Our school counselors and IS coordinator help craft a schedule that will meet your needs.

Update for the 2022-2023 school year forward:
All 9th and 10th graders in Ski Academy will be scheduled with their IS PE or IS PE/Health course as their first ski academy period. If students desire a second section of Ski Academy - they will be assigned either IS Biology for 9th graders or IS Chemistry for 10th graders. We do encourage families of 9th grade students to consider starting high school with 1 period of Ski Academy and 5 on campus classes. If students desire to take other courses through IS - they may do so via a pre-approved online course, but schedules won't be changed for this purpose. Please speak with your school counselor about those online options before registering. The ski academy contract will be due in May to participate and verification of your participation with your organization will happen in the fall.

11th and 12th grade students may qualify for up to 2 periods of Ski Academy. Most families will need to plan on at least one of those periods to be taken through a pre-approved online course at self-pay (~$200-$1000 per course).

The NTHS Ski Academy program is not designed to support the full day training programs (we are designed to support a morning or afternoon session only - not both). Families that are participating in that specific program are encouraged to explore other options in our area to meet that specific need. Feel free to contact us if you have questions.

Full Independent Study support while travelling for competitions

For winter athletes, competitions typically mean travelling to various races for several days to 2 weeks at a time. During these periods - you are able to take your classes on the road with you. Teachers make work and assignments available to you while being accessible via email or phone to answer questions.

Most teachers also have actual lessons accessible via the internet and other support tools that students can access 24/7.

Please note that NTHS's Ski Academy program
is not a distance learning program. Students must attend school regularly in Tahoe City, CA, but are able to request periodic or re-occurring independent study contracts.

Dedicated Independent Study Coordinator focusing on your success

We have an Independent Study Coordinator that focuses on our Ski/IS Academies to support with both the off campus courses you take throughout the year and while you are travelling on full independent study.

Rest assured that families are not left to stumble their way through their high school education and after high school planning process. NTHS has two full-time school counselors who helps students develop academically, socially, and with post-secondary planning.
