AWESOME ATHLETES.
STELLAR SCHOLARS.

Are you a competitive downhill or nordic skier? Are you involved in dance or other extra curricular that makes it difficult to attend a "regular" high school because of training schedules and competitions? Do you want to find a place where you are supported through flexible scheduling while still getting the benefits of a free, public education?

North Tahoe High School's Ski and Independent Study Academies may be the perfect fit for you.

*Note that this program is for students in grades 9-12.

Flexible scheduling allows for a consistent training regimen.

NTHS serves about 100-125 students through our Ski Academy program each year (just about a quarter of our school) and has developed a robust yet accessible approach to navigating the complexities of a high level athlete and benefits of a public education.

Most students in the Ski Academy enroll in 4-5 on-campus academic courses and 1-3 independent study (IS) courses. These courses may be through in-district providers (subject to availability) or online providers (self-pay). With guidance from our school counselors and IS coordinator, we will work on developing a schedule that meets your needs.

9th & 10th Graders

Primary Scheduling: All 9th and 10th-grade Ski Academy students will be scheduled for IS PE or IS PE/Health as their first Ski Academy period.

Additional Options:

9th graders can opt for IS Biology as a second Ski Academy period.
10th graders can opt for IS Chemistry as a second Ski Academy period.

Recommendation: We encourage families of 9th graders to consider starting high school with 1 period of Ski Academy and 5 on-campus classes for a balanced schedule.
Independent Study: Students may take additional courses through pre-approved online providers (self-pay), but schedules will not be adjusted to accommodate these courses. Please consult your school counselor before enrolling.

Deadlines:

The Ski Academy contract is due in May.
Participation will be verified in the fall with your organization.

11th & 12th Graders
  • Scheduling Options: Eligible students may take up to 2 periods of Ski Academy, with one period typically completed through a pre-approved online course (self-pay; $200-$1,000 per course).

The NTHS Ski Academy is designed to accommodate half-day training schedules (morning or afternoon sessions). We do not support full-day training programs. Families requiring a full-day program are encouraged to explore other options in the area.

Independent Study support while travelling for competitions

Winter athletes often travel for competitions, which can range from a few days to three weeks. During these trips, you can continue your classes while on the road. Teachers provide assignments and classwork in advance (typically via Google Classroom) and remain accessible via email or phone to answer your questions. Students do need to return to school every 3 weeks at minimum.

Many teachers also offer online lessons and support tools, available 24/7, to help you stay on track with your coursework.

Important Note:
The NTHS Ski Academy is not a distance learning program. Students are required to attend school regularly in Tahoe City, CA. However, you can request periodic or recurring independent study contracts to accommodate your training and competition schedule. It also a full year program - not just a winter program. Our school schedule is not ideal for students transferring in half way through the year.
